520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. From Ek-stase to Ecstasy In his constant attempt to free himself from self, to escape pain and break out from a body threatened on all sides by the world about it, Glenn Gould cultivated escape in the art of fugue and paradox. How could such a state of ek-stase be achieved if only by withdrawing into his innermost being, into the confidential universe of inner thought and by creating a series of envelopes around himself like layer upon layer of protective clothing. When later in life Gould refused to perform in public and withdrew from the world into solitude, a state of total retreat into self, he would endlessly abandon himself to a world of thought where only his keyboard and music existed. Music he would disarticulate, decompose, transform and re-create time and again. He would tirelessly play the piano which inhabited his mind until an inexpressible point of ecstasy was reached. Glenn Gould exhibits a number of original psychic mechanisms which he applies to music. Firstly, his destruction of bonds and his isolation, so reminiscent here of schizophrenic thought mechanisms, but also the transformations, the re-elaborations which enable him to escape the grip of destructiveness and lead him down the path towards recovered creativity and the appropriation of a musical language at once both destroyed and re-created, towards a re-appropriation of self. One might speak here in terms of thought processes capable of re-creating musical voices in turn leading to the ecstasy of self-engenderment.
