520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Bateau phare, magasin phare: [N1N2]N compounds and syntactic N1+N2 sequences with adjectivized N2 in FrenchFrench has a class of subordinative compound nouns like bateau phare ‘boat lighthouse = lightship’. Other N+N sequences like magasin phare ‘store lighthouse, i.e. flagship store’ or projet phare ‘project lighthouse, i.e. flagship project’ can be found, in which the attributive second element has a reduced intension compared with that of the corresponding noun and displays a qualifying effect. After a discussion of the status of compounds and the notion of adjectivity, distinguishing uses as compound modifiers and as attributive modifiers in NPs, a group of 29 nouns frequently found in attributive use are examined relative to 7 parameters of adjectivity using the Web as corpus. The parameters are synthesized into a score of adjectiveness which makes it possible to classify the units and shows that, whereas some are almost fully adjectivized, others remain limited to their qualifying attributive uses. The noun to adjective change is discussed in terms of reanalysis. |
