520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This paper intends to show that topic fronting constructions (also called topicalizations) are in fact left dislocations with a zero pronoun and, consequently, genuine fronting always corresponds to a focus construction. It has already been shown in other works that a preposed direct object NP whose denotatum is generic is in fact left dislocated and linked to a null pronoun. I broaden the scope of this analysis to all topic fronting constructions in French and show that the denotatum of a preposed direct object NP is not necessarily generic. I also demonstrate that differences presented by diverse types of topic fronting constructions are due to the distinction between hanging topic left dislocation (HTLD) and clitic left dislocation (ClLD), and that both constructions can be realized with a null pronoun. |
