| Summary, etc. | La propagande totalitaire est un phénomène complexe, qui suppose, comme l’a montré Hannah Arendt, presque toujours des menaces voilées, et une certaine forme d’utilisation de la force physique. La preuve en est le « phénomène Piteşti », une procédure extrême utilisée en Roumanie par le régime communiste après son installation. Elle combinait l’étude de la doctrine communiste avec la torture physique et morale. La procédure avait lieu dans une prison et visait la transformation des victimes en tortionnaires. Le cadre spécifique ne semble pas moins important que la procédure elle-même, nommée « arrachage de masques » et supposant 4 étapes. L’impact psychologique très fort conduisait à un effondrement proche de la psychose chez beaucoup de détenus. Ceci permet de faire l’hypothèse d’une action sur le refoulement originaire. Le masochisme est aussi beaucoup sollicité. En même temps, les liens entre les prisonniers, tous des étudiants, sont transformés d’horizontaux en verticaux. De cette façon, dans la propagande totalitaire, la démonstration de force semble plus importante que la doctrine. |

| Summary, etc. | Totalitarian Propaganda and Force in the ‘Piteşti Phenomenon’. Totalitarian propaganda is a complex phenomenon. According to Hannah Arendt, it almost always supposes veiled threats and some form of physical force. Proof of this lies in the ‘Pitesti Phenomenon, ’ an extreme procedure used in Romania by the Communist regime after its installation. It combined the study of Communist doctrine with physical and mental torture. The process took place in a prison and was designed to transform its victims into torturers. The specific context in which it took place is no less important than the process itself, called « unmasking » and organised into four stages. The strong psychological impact of this torture led to collapse into psychosis among many inmates. It is therefore possible to infer its impact on primal repression. Masochism also played a key role. Simultaneously to this, bonds between prisoners, all students, were changed from horizontal to vertical. Thus we might argue that in totalitarian propaganda, the demonstration of force is more important than doctrine. |
