520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Absolute Risk. The Bottom Line of Reading and Interpretation What is it that allows meaning to become clear and for us to therefore glimpse the importance of a text written by an unknown author ? For a publisher, this is a highly pertinent question, because reading is the core activity of their job, and missing the point is a key risk factor, one which could lead them overlook a major work by a future major writer. Yet the question has more general importance too, in that it encourages us to explore the complex phenomenon of what reading really is. Everyone has examples in mind of authors made famous by texts which were first refused by a whole set of publishing houses – Proust, Beckett, to name by two. Generally speaking, this is taken as a sign of the incompetence of the publishers in question and seen as an opportunity to denounce their caginess towards anything too unexpected or innovative. But is this really the case ? For how could initial errors of this kind be so common, or possible even, if reading were only a question of intelligence, taste and competence ?
