| Summary, etc. | Transference and the Experience of Time in Patients Suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. The discourse of Alzheimer’s patients, often referred to as suffering from dementia, exhibits highly unusual expressions of condensation and displacement, and their relationship with time conveys the effects of age, of successive losses and reworkings in the objectal sphere, together with structural modalities linking them to other people. The subject is eclipsed concomitantly with the progressive loss of the coordinates of others within the patient’s psychic economy. How can we find ways of addressing the specific modalities of outcome-unknotting that the ageing process brings, thereby unravelling the signifying chain and structure of the subject. How indeed can psychoanalysis help us hear words which are little more than the fragmented flotsam and jetsam of speech ? How can traces of subjectivity be recovered in a discourse which no longer seems to make any sense, so strong is the presence of discontinuity and unbinding ? What are the implications and effect of this on transference and therapeutic options ? |
