520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. White Martyr / Red Martyr. A Theological Proposal. This article explores the question of ‘choice of lifestyle’ for Christians rather than the desire to sacrifice one’s life to a cause. It is their referral to Jesus Christ, who gave his life for others, which operates as the common denominator of these lifestyle choices and of the choice made to give one’s life to others. A highly particular relationship with time arises from this stance – the present is kairos, the ‘between two times’ of decision-making in which the truth of the living memory of the love of God’s son comes into play. In this light, the world does not revolve around worldly success, but rather the ‘immateriality’ embodied in the Cross. The article goes on to examine this question in the light of the story of the seven monks of Tibhirine. Theirs was a peaceful community, bearing witness to a non-violent God, and the monks were not armed. The White Martyr is then the monk, as are the women of Algeria who, despite the violence going on about them, carried on doing the shopping and taking the children to school. In other words, getting on with life. The article ends with a discussion of Pierre Claverie, Bishop of Oran, and assassinated in August 1996. His life illustrated the intimate bond between the White Martyr who offers hospitality to others and the Blood Martyr who raises his or her head when situations become conflictual and violent.
