Summary, etc. | La question des idéaux se pose aujourd’hui plus que jamais à l’image. Nous trouvons des figures tragiques au cinéma qui provoquent la pensée et offrent au spectateur une issue cathartique dont il convient de prendre la mesure dans notre culture contemporaine. Cet article souhaite poser la question de la place du martyr à travers le miroir de l’identité qu’est le cinéma. Cette problématique s’illustre dans la confrontation des idéaux au sein des cultures planétaires. Le sujet contemporain dans sa construction et son identité est confronté par ce biais au choc des identités. Identité contre identité, posant l’aporie de l’altérité comme issue. Il convient d’abord d’interroger la place qu’a le cinéma pour donner à penser ce malaise. À travers l’exemple du film Lend of Plenty du cinéaste allemand Win Wenders, la dialectique de l’identité et de ses idéaux est posée dans ses enjeux paradoxaux. Ce paradoxe instaure la figure du martyr dans ses excès de façon à prendre la mesure des contradictions posées aux identités contemporaines, tentées par la victimisation et le fanatisme. Il convient donc d’interroger la place du cinéma dans notre culture, puis à partir de l’exposé narratif du film, de mettre à jour l’un des aspects du malaise contemporain à propos de ces questions. |

Summary, etc. | The ‘Clash’ of Ideals. What the Cinema Tells us about the Identity of Martyrs The question of ideals is more relevant today than it has ever been. Tragic figures haunt our cinema screens and set us thinking, offering the spectator a cathartic experience which must be measured by the yardstick of contemporary society. This article raises the question of the role of the martyr as reflected in the mirror to identity cinema holds up. This question is illustrated in the confrontation of clashing ideals within the dominant cultures of our planet. The contemporary subject, in the construction of his or her personality and identity, is thereby confronted with an identity clash. Identity pitted against identity, with the aporia of otherness as sole solution. We will first examine the role of cinema as a means of approaching this sense of discontent. An example will be discussed, Land of Plenty by German film director Win Wenders, in which the dialectics of identity and its ideals are explored within the framework of paradoxical stakes. This paradox in turn establishes the figure of the martyr in all its excess in such a way as to allow us to appraise the contradictions inherent in contemporary identities, tinged with victimisation and fanaticism. We will then go on to question the role of cinema in our culture, and from the narrative of the film examined, we will explore one of the essential aspects of contemporary discontent in the light of these questions. |
