520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This paper has a dual objective. It firstly sets out to compare the way in which referential noun phrases give rise to different types of anaphoric expressions in French and English. It then goes on to identify and detail the different strategies used to provide qualitative information about the referents introduced. We demonstrate that French and English have specific preferences: first with regard to the choice of categories of referential expressions, with French avoiding repetition and therefore making far greater use than English of redenomination, i.e. using « unfaithful » or lexical anaphors. As for the coding of qualitative information, French favours initial sentence position, whereas English tends to place this information after the verb more. We adopt a textual perspective in order to explain the observed differences. |
