Summary, etc. | L’œuvre de Samuel Beckett se dessine dans ses pièces de théâtre comme une ligne inéluctable qui lie la naissance et la mort. Comme il le dit lui-même, « celle de la mise en route et celui de la mise en corbeille ». Dès le début, les personnages de Beckett commencent par se taire, jusqu’à ce qu’à la fin, l’acte scénique devienne des balbutiements. Les silences, le rythme, les différentes sonorités, la musicalité, étaient pour Beckett, dans ses mises en scène, plus importants que la symbolique des mots. Son effort, en ce qui concerne son écriture était, précisément, de traiter les mots comme des choses qui se donnent à voir. |

Summary, etc. | Beckett. The Reverse Side of WordsThe path followed by Samuel Beckett in his work may be traced through his plays as leading from birth to death. As he put it himself, ‘from the start to the waste-paper basket.’ From the very beginning, Beckett’s characters start by saying nothing, and his plays end with stagings of their stammerings and stutterings. Silences, rhythm, varying sonorities and musicality were all essential to Beckett’s theatricality, far more important than the meaning of words per se. His art aimed at finding ways through writing of treating words as things which may be seen. |
