Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Le travail présenté ici porte sur la relation existant entre la performance, mesurée par des indices comportementaux et les connaissances, mesurées par un rapport verbal. L’expérience rapportée, assez proche d’une situation naturelle, consiste pour le participant à prévoir sur écran d’ordinateur le point de chute, sur un plan inférieur d’une boule qui tombe d’un plan supérieur horizontal sur lequel elle a roulé. Elle vise à 1 / étudier comment varie la performance des sujets en fonction de la variation d’un certain nombre de facteurs connus pour avoir ou ne pas avoir un rôle effectif ; 2 / évaluer la capacité à rendre compte verbalement des performances réalisées et 3 / estimer l’influence possible sur les performances d’une instruction donnée ou d’une réflexion à voix haute dans le cadre d’une interview structurée. Les résultats obtenus atténuent l’optimisme provenant d’une certaine partie de la littérature relative à l’adaptation comportementale et modulent également l’hypothèse d’une double dissociation entre les registres déclaratif et procédural. Le point de vue consistant à souligner la possibilité d’ajuster sa parole à son action et réciproquement a été confirmé : la médiation par le langage s’est trouvée ainsi consolidée. Ces résultats nous incitent, entre autres, à poursuivre l’investigation inhérente aux données en première personne qui, dans leur expression linguistique, peuvent constituer une source pertinente et légitime d’information sur le fonctionnement cognitif qui n’est pas directement observable. |

Summary, etc. | CONCEPTUALIZATION, VERBAL REPORTS AND BEHAVIORAL ADAPTATION TO A PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR TASK This study examines the relationship between performance evaluated using behavioral cues and knowledge assessed by verbal reports. Although verbalization fell out of fashion some time ago, it is once again starting to become established as an indicator of cognitive processes in a variety of fields, including the analysis of work situations. Experimental research on implicit learning and intuitive physics has contributed a great deal to the present study, presenting a number of interesting and unexpected results. This research has, however, also raised some different questions. It is therefore necessary to conduct experiments which focus on the methodological and theoretical issues arising from the relationship between the verbalization activity itself and the activity to which it refers. In an experiment, in which conditions are close to those experienced in a natural situation, participants have to predict, using a computer, the landing place of a ball which first rolls along a superior plane before falling onto an inferior plane. Three issues are examined. First, we examine how behavioral adaptation varies when some factors known to exert an influence (such as speed and height) or not (such as size and distance) are manipulated. Second, the capacity to explain the actual performance is evaluated. Finally, we consider the possible influences of any new knowledge or the process of thinking aloud on performance. The results of this research show that we should perhaps be less optimistic about the extent to which a subject’s behaviour can adapt to a task than some of the literature would suggest. They also modulate the hypothesis of a double dissociation between the declarative and procedural registers. In addition, it can now be shown that the hypothesis that knowledge can be reciprocally translated into know-how can be defended to the same degree as mediation by language. We conclude by looking at links between empirical results in experimental science and first-person knowledge. |
