Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Thought as a Form of Shared Excitation. This paper examines the excitation generated by acts of thinking. Freud was the first to break with the cognitivist stance on the philosophical approach to thought and to posit that the complexes associated with acts of thinking may be analysed in the same way as affective complexes. Freud was also the first to develop an economic model of this process. We will compare Sartre’s ideas with Freud’s approach, and, more specifically, the former’s theory developed in Question de Méthode that thought is always intimately associated with its age. Sartre argues that thought can only become so if its relationship with its age is dynamic and strong, thereby allowing us to suppose that thought is a shared form of excitation because it is born from the investigative drive of a class of men who partake in a single affect and who adhere to the same overriding desire for ascension. This also means that this shared excitation pushes them towards seizing objects which hitherto had escaped their grasp in the position they held. This provides the perfect framework for examining the question of the responsibility of individuals in whom the ideas of their age and the excitation they generate are most intensely felt. |
