520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The Death of the Hero Heroism is an expression of our need to believe in the heroic transcendence of every day life and death, since it concerns warriors and their sacrifice. It is also an example of the fundamental difference between idealisation and sublimation. The latter stems from the libidinal drives connected to the Ego Ideal of childhood through the process in which the child’s sense of omnipotence is lost and replaced by a jouissance in deeds. Idealisation, on the contrary, inhibits the subject by means of unfeasible and unrealistic projects. Heroes are indeed characterised by their capacity to carry out deeds, to which so many tales and legends bear witness. The hero thereby becomes an ideal, not for himself but for others, who often go so far as to consider him as a demi-god. This question is particularly important during adolescence due to the far-reaching idealisation processes present during this period. The teenager must renounce his position in the parent’s eyes as an ideal child, or, rather, must prove that it is in ways quite different to what that parent had imagined that he will achieve such ideals. |
