| Summary, etc. | Richard Wagner est sans doute l’un des rares compositeurs qui divise de façon aussi tranchée les mélomanes. On a pu parler de wagnerolâtres mais également de wagnerophobes... et au sujet de la participation au festival de Bayreuth, où sont représentés chaque année les opéras de Wagner, de « pèlerinage ». Ces termes, que l’on verrait difficilement appliqués à un autre compositeur, indiquent bien l’effet passionnel déclenché par la musique du créateur de Tristan et Isolde. Qu’entend donc le mélomane pour être aussi violemment sollicité ou au contraire si brutalement dérangé lorsqu’il se met à l’écoute de la musique de Wagner ? C’est à partir d’une étude de la mélo-manie ou passion musicale et de la temporalité spécifique développée par l’œuvre wagnérienne que l’auteur de cet article s’attache à répondre à cette question. |

| Summary, etc. | Do You Like Wagner? Richard Wagner is doubtless almost the only composer to divide music lovers quite so radically. Some adore his music, while others utterly despise it... and for some, attending the Bayreuth Festival which hosts performances of Wagner’s operas each year is a veritable ‘pilgrimage.’ Such violent emotions are not commonly expressed towards other composers and such vehemence is indicative of the effect triggered by Wagner’s music itself. What in this music so violently grips or, on the contrary, so profoundly disturbs the listener? The author of this paper attempts to provide responses to this question by exploring the nature of the love for music in the light of the specific temporality of Wagner’s works. |
