La patrie ouverte des droits de l’homme se voit confrontée à une nouvelle patrie, nationaliste et fermée, dont Maurice Barrès est le porte-parole ; elle correspond à une représentation maternelle, archaïque et toute-puissante, qui exige la soumission, et dont l’individu « jouit par symbiose », pour reprendre l’expression de Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor. Mais est-ce que les arguments rationnels de F. de Pressensé et de J. Jaurès suffisent dans le combat contre la diffusion de cette notion ? |

| Summary, etc. | In 1898, the Dreyfus Affair brought opposition to a head between nationalists and defenders of human rights. The nation fully ‘open’ to human rights found itself confronted with a new nation of a nationalist, ‘closed’ nature of which Maurice Barrès was the spokesman; the latter’s vision corresponds to a representation of the mother figure which is archaic, all-powerful and demanding submission and with which the individual enters into ‘blissful symbiosis’, to quote the expression coined by Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor. Yet did the rational arguments put forward by F. de Pressensé and J. Jaurès suffice to combat the dissemination of such ideas? |
