520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The domestic dog (canis familiaris) was the first animal to be domesticated by man. Dogs are present in almost all human societies and are capable of fulfilling numerous functions, be they economic (sleigh dogs), security related (police dogs), military (combat dog), scientific (vivisection), humanitarian (guide dogs for the blind, search and rescue dogs, assistance dogs), sport related (sleigh dogs, racing dogs) or food related (butcher’s dog). The large variety of races available make way for very various forms of companionship. While man’s ‘best friend’ is often almost treated as a member of the family and an object of love, dogs are also the object of numerous phobias and a certain cultural ambivalence is therefore associated with them. |
