| Summary, etc. | Ayant une longue histoire discontinue, l’atmosphère carnavalesque semble émerger, de nos jours, comme registre d’expression. Seulement, elle est coupée du cadre mythique dans lequel elle a pris naissance : depuis les années soixante, nous dit Pauvert, un déchaînement s’exprime en des formes qui rappellent le dyonysisme. Toutefois cette résurgence du paganisme se distingue de l’univers breughélien, boschien et rabelaisien, puisque son défoulement, en s’affranchissant des racines et du cadre essentiellement rituel, tourne de nos jours à vide. Mais, à travers les figures déstructurées du peintre libanais Raouf Rifaï, nous analyserons la réponse artistique à la question du vivre-ensemble. Nous verrons alors en quoi cet art carnavalesque contemporain est, cette fois-ci, doté d’une dimension puissamment subversive au regard du contexte politique du Liban. |

| Summary, etc. | In the wake of its both long and discontinuous history, the carnivalesque atmosphere is once again remerging today as an expressive mode. It has, however, been severed from the mythical framework within which it was born – since the 1960s, Pauvert tells us, an unleashing of energy has found its expression in forms reminiscent of Dionysianism. Yet this resurgent paganism is quite distinct from the worlds created by Breughel, Bosch and Rabelais, in that its outpouring has broken free from its roots and inherently ritualistic structure and today is stuck in a loop. This paper will explore the deconstructed figures of Lebanese painter Raouf Rifaï as a means of analysing artistic responses to the question of living together. This will enlighten us to how contemporary carnivalesque art is endowed with a powerfully subversive dimension in light of Lebanon’s current political context. |
