Summary, etc. | L’art et le pouvoir ont tous les deux à voir avec la représentation. Le pouvoir s’est imposé assez vite à homo sapiens comme une technique par laquelle un grand nombre est représenté par un petit nombre — et parfois un seul. L’art a affaire autrement avec la représentation. Son enjeu semble souvent de représenter l’irreprésentable — le coït ou la mort — , et s’il y un pouvoir de l’art, il tient aussi paradoxalement dans son impuissance On prendra d’abord comme exemple l’avant-garde russe où pouvoir et art semblent danser ensemble et ensuite le fameux « verdict », comme dit Youssef Ishaghpour, de Theodor Adorno : « Ecrire un poème après Auschwitz est barbare ». Adorno semble retirer à l’art son pouvoir civilisateur. Le poète Paul Celan, dans un entretien intellectuel continu avec Adorno qu’il admirait aussi, ne l’entendait pas ainsi. |

Summary, etc. | Both art and power have to do with representation. It became evident fairly quickly to homo sapiens that power is a technique where a great number are represented by a few — and sometimes just one. Art deals differently with representation. What often seems at stake is the representation of what cannot be represented – coitus or death – and if art does have power, it is paradoxically also due to its powerlessness. We will first consider the Russian avant-garde, a movement in which art appears to dance together with power and then we will examine Theodor Adorno’s famous « verdict » (as Youssef Ishaghpour puts it): « To write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric ». Adorno appears to divest art of its civilizing power. The poet Paul Celan, who maintained a constant intellectual dialogue with Adorno whom he also admired, disagreed with him. |
