Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The exceptional story of Joan of Arc seems to have been entirely dictated by the hallucinatory voices she heard. These voices also played a key part in leading her to her death at the stake. These saintly voices were in fact multiple variations on a positive, all powerful voice with an intermediary, arbitrary function, enabling Joan in her adolescence to go from Joan the Maid to Joan of Arc in a highly singular auto-creation of identity. Hallucinating voices was a way for her to represent the unbearable and unthinkable and of exteriorising a containing shell providing the means of auto-creation. The hallucinated voices served to create a singular form of self-representation which could be shared and which embodied the qualities of the saintly object narcissistically invested. This was made possible by the sufficiently adequate object relationship offered by the voices. The voice as a containing shell and its content is a projection, an externalised representation of the-fantasy of the ideal knight ready to accept self-sacrifice for a just cause. |
