520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Considering the playing house of the Baka children, this article analyzes their play environment in terms of social and physical aspects. The Baka children live in the south-eastern part of Cameroon. Parents are often absent in small settlements due to their work in the forest and fields. Children remain at home and spend their time playing. Playing house was the locus of the multiple activities that children collaboratively design in play: childcare, performing status as a competent member, co-creation of their fantasy, and sharing their knowledge of cooking. Playing house was not only a place where only socio-cultural knowledge was transmitted between children. Rather, it was the arena of negotiation of social relations with peers and co-construction of peer cultures driven by their shared fantasy. This article explores the neglected dimension of Baka children’s fantasy play using available objects (not toys as seen in Westernized and industrialized societies) and aims to prove the universality of social learning. |
