| Summary, etc. | C’est essentiellement dès sa coupe, c’est-à-dire lorsqu’il est mis à nu et séparé du flanc de la montagne, que le marbre de Carrare révèle ses propriétés particulières. Des carrières jusqu’aux ateliers de sculpture, cette pierre « marche », « pousse », « chante », vit d’eau et de lumière, peut mourir ou bien causer la mort. Les métiers du marbre apparaissent ainsi comme l’art de maintenir en vie la pierre à travers les différentes étapes du travail d’extraction et de transformation. Sur la base d’une enquête ethnographique réalisée avec différentes catégories socio-professionnelles du secteur marbrier, cet article explore la vitalité de la pierre en lien avec les évolutions de la filière depuis les années 1980. |

From the quarries to the sculpture studios, this stone “walks”, “pushes”, “sings”, lives off water and light, can die or cause death. The trades of marble therefore appear as the art of keeping stone alive throughout the different steps of extraction and transformation. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork carried out with different socio-professional categories of the marble sector, this article explored the vitality of stone in relation to the evolutions of the supply chain since the 1980s. |
