520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. ‪Pierre Borel, collector, scholar and polygrapher of the 17th century describes in his Antiquités de Castres some very remarkable stones in his eyes because of their phallic shape. He baptizes them “priapolithes” and wonders about their generation and their possible medicinal, even aphrodisiac virtues. But these stones above all provide him with a proof, among many others, of the life of stones, an ancient theory called into question by the young mechanistic science. This paper accompanies him in his reflection, and shows how, until the 19th century, the priapolithes which enrich the collections of naturalists are privileged objects for speculating on the meaning –if there is one beyond the pure “games of nature”– of the resemblances between certain stones and the organs of the human body and, more generally, of the very phenomenon of similarity which the human eye encounters everywhere in the nature.‪
