Summary, etc. | Il s’agit, dans cet article, de montrer comment la représentation de la nature à l’école primaire entre 1870 et 1914 a été mise au service du projet colonial de la Troisième République. En effet, se déplie dans la littérature scolaire un discours construit autour de la dialectique de la terre bénie d’un côté tandis que de l’autre est martelée l’idée que les territoires à conquérir sont abandonnés à la sauvagerie par des indigènes ignorant tout de la gestion de la nature. Fort de ce discrédit des autochtones, l’école républicaine s’est efforcée de susciter chez les petits Français des vocations, afin de faire de cette nature indomptée une nouvelle terre promise. Au corbillon de la mission civilisatrice de l’homme blanc, les autorités scolaires ont ainsi ajouté le fardeau écologique, autre moyen de disqualifier l’histoire des sociétés précoloniales. |

Summary, etc. | This article shows how the representation of nature in elementary schooling between 1870 and 1914 served the Third Republic’s colonial project. Indeed, academic publications were suffused with remarks built around the dialectic of the blessed land and with the idea that the territories to be conquered were abandoned to savagery by natives who ignored everything of nature management. Based on this discredit of the natives, the republican school tried to transmit vocations among French children in order to turn this untamed nature into a new promised land. To the civilizing mission of the white man, the school authorities have thus added the ecological burden, another way of disqualifying the history of pre-colonial societies. |
