Summary, etc. Cet article vise à mettre en lumière ce que l’enfance et le rapport à l’enfance ont d’inédit dans l’hypermodernité démocratique. Le propos relève donc de la philosophie politique de l’éducation, dans une perspective (néo)tocquevillienne, et concerne centralement le présent des sociétés occidentales. Nous commençons par y tirer brièvement les principales leçons de travaux contemporains majeurs consacrés à l’histoire philosophique de l’enfance, et examinons les manières plurielles dont l’enfance se récompense et se redéfinit à l’aune de l’individualisme démocratique et autour du droit. Nous plaidons dans un deuxième temps pour une philosophie politique de l’enfance, dont nous éprouverons la fécondité face aux thèmes et questions vives actuelles des articulations à penser entre éducation et politique, et des enjeux démographiques dans des sociétés individualistes. Nos derniers mots sont pour suggérer que cette question de l’enfance individualiste en démocratie recèle de remarquables vertus heuristiques et pratiques pour concevoir et réaliser une société des individus plus inclusive.

Summary, etc. This article aims to highlight what is new about both childhood and relationship to childhood in the context of democratic hypermodernity. It therefore deals with political philosophy of education in a (neo-)Tocquevillian perspective and with the situation of Western societies in our day and age. First, we briefly discuss the main lessons learned from major contemporary works dedicated to the philosophical history of childhood. We consider the multiple ways in which childhood is rewarded and redefined, in the light of democratic individualism and in terms of law. Then, we argue for a political philosophy of childhood, whose fruitfulness is assessed in light of controversial themes and issues that can be found in the articulations between education and politics and in the demographic challenges of individualistic societies. Finally, we suggest that the question of the individualistic childhood in democratic societies conceals remarkable heuristic and practical value for conceiving and achieving a more inclusive society of individuals.
