520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Brussels Town Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the major Gothic buildings in the city and has influenced the architectural history of the former Southern Netherlands. The building has mostly attracted interest from historians and art historians, and has received little attention from archaeologists. With this in mind, and in order to improve our knowledge of this monument, the het Centre de Recherches en Archéologie et Patrimoine at the Université libre de Bruxelles investigated the Gothic masonry of this monument at the request of the City of Brussels. The study investigated whether any traces of structures pre-dating the aldermen’s house had been preserved. The opportunity was also taken to review certain hypotheses on the dating of the belfry, to draw attention to hitherto unsuspected construction activity and to highlight the complexity of this public building.
