| Summary, etc. | L’offensive du Têt, lancée par le Viêtcong et les Nord-Viêtnamiens le 31 janvier 1968, constitue sans aucun doute le tournant de la guerre du Viêtnam. La victoire stratégique des communistes s’explique notamment par la surprise de l’offensive, qui constitue un véritable choc à la fois pour les responsables politiques américains mais aussi pour la population aux États-Unis. L’opinion américaine se retrouve confortée dans sa méfiance vis-à-vis des déclarations de l’administration Johnson, qui s’est accrue dès 1967, et qui pousse finalement le président à entamer des négociations avec Hanoï et à ne pas se représenter à l’élection présidentielle de 1968. La surprise du Têt ne doit rien au hasard : elle s’explique par une planification méticuleuse de l’offensive communiste et a contrario par une faillite globale de l’effort de renseignement et d’analyse des Américains, notamment en raison d’une sous-estimation de l’ennemi et d’idées préconçues qui empêchent de lire correctement les renseignements recueillis, et de dresser une vision d’ensemble exacte des intentions adverses. |

Strategic communist victory is mainly due to the surprise of the offensive, which is a shock for both U.S. policymakers but also for the population in the United States. The American public finds confirmed in his mistrust vis-à-vis the statements of the Johnson administration, which has increased since 1967, and finally pushes the president to negotiate with Hanoi and don’t stand to the presidential election of 1968.
