Summary, etc. | People for the ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) produit d’abondantes publicités mettant des célébrités féminines dans une situation marquante impliquant le corps, le plus souvent le leur et dénudé. Nous présentons tout d’abord les trois composantes majeures de ce discours (provocation, célébrité, corporéité) visant à obtenir la médiatisation à destination du grand public. Nous menons ensuite une étude de contenu du traitement de PeTA en France par la presse et la télévision de 1994 à 2020 afin d’établir dans quelle mesure cette médiatisation résulte de la stratégie de l’organisation pour promouvoir le véganisme et l’antispécisme. Nos résultats indiquent une visibilité croissante de PeTA après son implantation en France, des différences entre médias et une ambivalence quant aux évolutions de la médiatisation obtenue. Cela permet d’interroger l’enjeu de la communication dans la cause animale par rapport au positionnement et à la stratégie de l’organisation militante. |

Summary, etc. | People for the ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) releases many ads putting women celebrities in a striking context involving a body, most often theirs and nude. First, we substantiate and discuss the three main frames of this discourse (provocation, celebrity, body) which aim at getting media coverage for a wide audience. Then we conduct a content analysis of PeTA’s print and broadcasted media coverage in France from 1994 to 2020 in order to assess to what extent this media coverage stems from the organization’s strategy to promote veganism and anti-speciesism. Our results show an increased visibility after PeTA founded its French branch, differences between media outlets and an ambivalence regarding how the media discourse is evolving. Such results raise the issue of communication strategy as a major one for animal rights radical activism. |
