Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Since the 1970s, many historians have studied France’s role in the Sudeten crisis and the decision-making process that led Édouard Daladier to Munich on 29 September 1938. The resulting historiography has placed General Gamelin among the people responsible for France’s having signed the Munich Agreement. He is said to have shirked his responsibility by implicitly dissuading the French government from confronting the conquering Third Reich. However, new sources that have become accessible over the past thirty years allow for a reexamination of General Gamelin’s role in September 1938 and of his views on general and operational strategy in 1938. What emerges is a military leader who was conscious of the risks of the upcoming conflict and anxious both to advise his government effectively and to optimize the military resources at his disposal. |
