| Summary, etc. | Résumé :Le développement des auxiliaires dans les langues romanes a été interprété traditionnellement comme un exemple typique du passage de verbes sémantiquement pleins vers des verbes devenus des mots-outils, en ayant perdu une partie de leur sens lexical. La présente étude propose d’élargir l’analyse, en y intégrant trois autres sortes de verbes – verbes modaux, verbes en incise, verbes de focalisation – en examinant systématiquement leur comportement par rapport à quelques propriétés morpho-syntaxiques de base qui caractérisent les verbes de plein statut. On peut ainsi définir plusieurs degrés de passage vers le statut de mot-outil. |

| Summary, etc. | Auxiliary verbs have developed in all romance languages and have been interpreted as the result of a diachronic process, evolving from full lexical verbs to “empty grammatical words”, whose main function would be to ensure tense, aspect and mood for other verbs. This analysis can be completed by some morpho-syntactic indications, giving access to a scale of five main grammatical verbal properties. Along with full lexical verbs and auxiliaries, other verbal types can be characterized by these properties : modal verbs, quotation verbs and focalization verbs, each being in its own way a kind of “grammatical word”. |
