| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes thêmata représentent, selon Holton (1981), des conceptions ontologiques invérifiables, implicites et présentes sous la forme de couples d’opposition (unité versus diversité, complexité versus simplicité...). Nous tentons de repérer l’intervention de tels présupposés métaphysiques dans l’œuvre académique de neuf chercheurs évoluant en STAPS. En outre, à partir d’entretiens de type récit de recherche, il s’agit de comprendre ce qui motive l’engagement des savants en faveur d’un thêma plutôt que d’un autre. Deux hypothèses sont testées : d’une part, un savant opterait pour une option thêmatique donnée parce que celle-ci lui permet d’investir des significations et valeurs intimes en référence à son histoire singulière ; d’autre part, dans la mesure où les thêmata s’inscrivent dans l’espace de la pensée symbolique, le choix par le savant d’une option au détriment d’une autre relève d’une rationalité iconographique, en fonction de la puissance spontanée d’évocation que l’image exerce sur lui. Bien que les engagements thêmatiques apparaissent comme la résultante de choix motivés, ils n’en demeurent pas moins irréfutables, ce qui oblige à discuter de leurs modalités de participation à l’argumentation scientifique. Seront alors présentées deux positions épistémologiques pragmatiques suggérant d’évaluer non pas la validité a priori des thêmata mais leur fécondité a posteriori. |

| Summary, etc. | The themata in sports sciences research: motivations and modalities of interventionAccording to Holton (1981), the themata are irrefutable and implicit ontological conceptions, in the form of couples of opposition: unity versus diversity, complexity versus simplicity... We identify the intervention of such metaphysical presuppositions in the academic work of nine scholars involved in the french field of sports sciences research. Moreover, from interviews “tales of research”, we try to understand which motivates the thematic choices by the researchers. Two hypotheses are tested: firstly, a scholar would prefer a given thematic option because this one allows him to invest intimate values and meanings, in reference to his peculiar history; secondly, as far as the themata recover from the symbolic thought, the thematic choices depend on an iconographic rationality where the pictures have a spontaneous power of evocation on the scientist. Although the thematic commitments appear as the result of motivated choices, they remain unverifiable, what obliges to discuss of their modalities of participation in the scientific reasoning. We present two pragmatic positions which suggest to assess not the a priori validity of the themata but their a posteriori fecundity. |
