| Summary, etc. | Michel Foucault a-t-il transformé la politique de l'après-Mai 68 ou bien est-ce la politique qui l'a transformé ? Ces deux points de vue opposés et complémentaires ont en commun l'oubli du travail politique que Michel Foucault a dû faire pour avoir droit de cité sur « le marché de l'engagement », puis pour s'y imposer comme le « philosophe engagé » de l'après-Mai 68. « Entré en politique » avec la création du Groupe d'Information sur les Prisons (G.I.P.), Michel Foucault a d'abord adopté les « mots de la tribu », reprenant à son compte la doxa gauchiste sous sa forme la plus radicale et – il faut bien le dire – la plus rudimentaire. Cette expérience du G.I.P. est intéressante à double titre : une nouvelle forme d'engagement politique s'y expérimente, une première brèche est ouverte dans la doxa gauchiste. Un compromis symbolique (et politique) entre la vision « gauchiste » et la « vision contre-culturelle » du monde s'élabore peu à peu, où la seconde reste subordonnée à la première. Une nouvelle brèche apparaît dans ce compromis avec la publication de Surveiller et punir. Michel Foucault rectifie à la fois sa représentation de la « plèbe non prolétarisée » et du prolétariat, l'un et l'autre disqualifiés dans « la lutte contre le pouvoir ». Par ailleurs, il met en cause la subordination des « luttes sectorielles » contre l'oppression à « la lutte centrale » du prolétariat contre l'exploitation, faisant ainsi sauter le dernier verrou qui tenait enfermée la nouvelle vision « contre-culturelle » du monde dans la vision « gauchiste ». De la création du G.I.P. à Surveiller et punir, la conception du rôle de l'intellectuel, selon Michel Foucault, a, elle aussi, évolué. Elle conserve certaines caractéristiques de « l'intellectuel au service du peuple » mais lui restitue des fonctions proprement intellectuelles : ainsi s'élabore la figure de (l'intellectuel spécifique). |

| Summary, etc. | Did Michel Foucault transform the post-May-68 politics or did politics transform him? These two conflicting and complementary points of view have in common that they both overlook the political work that Michel Foucault had to do in order to find a place on the « political involvement market », then to impose himself as « the involved philosopher » of the post-may-68 period. « Entering politics » with the creation of the Group of Information on Prisons (G. I. P.), Michel Foucault first adopted the « tribal words », adopting the leftist doxa in its most radical and- one has to admit it- its most basic form. This G. I. P. experience is doubly interesting: a new form of political involvement is experimented, a first breech is open in the leftist doxa. A symbolical (and political) compromise between the « leftist » view and the « conter-cultural » view of the world is slowly being elaborated, where the second one is conditional to the first one. A new breech in this compromise appears with the publishing of Discipline and Punish. Michel Foucault corrects his representation of both the « non working-class pleb » and the proletariat, both disqualified in the « struggle against power ». Moreover he questions the subordination of « sectorial struggles » against oppression to the « central struggle » of the proletariat against exploitation, thus getting finally rid of the last lock that kept the new « conter-cultural » view subdued to the « leftist » view. From the creation of the G.I.P. to Discipline and Punish, the concept of the role of intellectuals, according to Michel Foucault, also evolved. It still keeps some characteristics of « the intellectual for the people » but gives back its intellectual functions as such: thus elaborating the character of the (specific intellectual). |
