Dans les années 1980, quelques services d'archives départementales ont exploré de nouvelles formes de médiation en concevant des « archivobus ». Ceux-ci s'inspiraient des « bibliobus », instruments de la politique de lecture publique développés trois décennies plus tôt. À ceci près qu'ils prenaient le risque de transporter des archives et non des livres, et visaient exclusivement le jeune public qu'il s'agissait d'intéresser à l'histoire par l'illustration d'un exemple local, in situ. Avec le « Semi des Archives », un semi-remorque dont l'aménagement scénographique intérieur a été minutieusement conçu, les Bouches-du-Rhône passent d'une démarche de transmission du savoir à une dynamique de partage de la mémoire, et délaissent le clivage des publics entre scolaires et adultes pour une approche intergénérationnelle et participative.

In the 1980's, a few local archive departments explored new ways of mediation by conceiving « archivobuses ». These were inspired by « bibliobuses », instruments of a policy implemented thirty years earlier that aimed at promoting reading. With the difference that they were taking the risk to transport archives, not books, and were meant exclusively for the young public, the point being to get them interested in history through the illustration of a local example, in situ. With the « sowing of archives », a trailer especially converted, the Bouches-du-Rhône county jumps from a logic of transmission of knowledge to a dynamic of sharing memory, and leaves the antagonism between scholar and adult publics for an inter-generational and participative approach.
