Avec l’industrialisation et l’urbanisation disparaissent les jeux traditionnels souvent violents associés au calendrier religieux ou s’immisçant dans le temps poreux du travail. Les sports se développent pour occuper le repos compensateur d’un labeur devenu intense et éreintant. La semaine footballistique se cantonne d’abord au samedi et au dimanche quand les épreuves hippiques et cyclistes débordent du week-end. Le temps hebdomadaire du sport est autant un moment pour soi qu’un lieu de contrôle et d’édification pour les pédagogues, le clergé, l’armée, le patronat et les régimes totalitaires et autoritaires. Les transformations technologiques et sociales du second xxesiècle ont pour conséquence la dilatation de la semaine sportive et son investissement par les femmes et les seniors. Le sport est partie prenante du temps partiellement poreux de la semaine postmoderne.

The invention of the sports week accompanied the transformation of physical exercise as much as that of social time. During industrialisation and urbanization times, the traditional games, often violent and linked to the religious calendar, disappeared, as did the porous time of work. Sports developed to compensate for the intense and gruelling workload. The football week was initially confined to Saturdays and Sundays, while horse-racing and cycling events were held over the weekend. The weekly sport time is as much a time for oneself as a place of control and edification for pedagogues, the clergy, the army, the employers and totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. The technological and social transformations of the second twentieth century have resulted in the dilatation of the sports week in which the participation of women and seniors is increasing. Sport is part of the partially porous time of the postmodern week.
