La source de la sociologie weberienne est généralement localisée dans les débats méthodologiques et théoriques de la fin du XIX e et du début du XX e siècle et non dans les problèmes concrets de la société allemande. L’examen des motifs de l’engagement de Weber dans la création de la Société Allemande de Sociologie montre que ses objectifs prioritaires n’étaient ni l’autonomie ni l’institutionnalisation de la sociologie comme discipline académi-que, mais la création d’un instrument et d’une infrastructure pour mener de grandes enquêtes « sans but pratique ». Ce projet sociologique est directement lié aux enquêtes, d’abord rurales, que Weber a réalisées dans le cadre du Verein für Sozialpolitik, à l’exploitation politique qu’il en a faite lui-même et à son échec pour imposer au Verein un programme et une méthodologie d’enquêtes sans but pratique immédiat. La sociologie rurale a oublié la source rurale de la sociologie de Weber. Par contre, dans la sociologie urbaine du XX e siècle, on peut rencontrer l’affirmation d’une filiation weberienne. L’examen du thème urbain à travers l’œuvre de Weber montre que, et pour quelles raisons, la société urbaine contemporaine en est absente tandis que le thème de la ville (Antiquité, Moyen Age, Orient) joue un rôle primordial dans l’enquête de Weber sur les conditions d’émergence du capitalisme d’entreprise moderne.

Town and country: what kind of relation to Max Weber’s sociological project? The sources of Weberian sociology are generally located in the methodological and theoretical debates of the late 19th and early 20th century rather than in the concrete problems of German society. Examining the motives of Weber’s commitment to the creation of the German Sociology Society shows that his objectives were not in priority the autonomy or the institutionalization of sociology as an academic discipline, but the creation of an instrument and infrastructure for carrying out great investigations “with no practical purpose”. This sociological project is directly linked, to the investigations, rural at first, carried out by Weber in the framework of the Verein für Sozialpolitik, to the political exploitation that he made of them himself, and to his failure in imposing to the Verein a program and a methodology for investigation with no immediate practical end. Rural sociology has forgotten the rural sources of Weber’s sociology. Yet, in the urban sociology of the 20th century, one can encounter the affirmation of a Weberian descent. Examination of the urban theme throughout Weber’s works shows that contemporary urban society is absent, and for what reasons, whereas the theme of the city (Ancient, Middle ages, Orient) plays a primordial role in Weber’s investigation on the conditions of emergence of modern enterprise capitalism.
