En partant de l’étude de la vie quotidienne des sans-abri rencontrés à Nancy (agglomération du Grand-Est recensant 300 000 habitants) dans le cadre d’une recherche en immersion ethnographique pendant huit mois, cet article entend montrer les structures sociales qui ordonnent le « monde » des sans-abri. Loin des notions d’errance et de désocialisation souvent mobilisées pour caractériser la situation individuelle des sans-abri, notre propos invite au contraire à se focaliser sur les dimensions collectives de l’expérience de la rue et met ainsi en lumière les structures spatio-temporelle, relationnelle et morale qui caractérisent cette expérience. On peut dès lors appréhender les sans-abri comme appartenant à un véritable monde social relativement structuré et observer comment cet ordre social survit malgré le turn-over des membres du microcosme des sans-abri.

Based on a study of the daily lives of the homeless in Nancy (a city in the Grand Est region with a population of 300,000) conducted during an eight-month immersive ethnographic research project, this article aims to show the social structures which order the homeless world. Far from the notions of “wandering” and “desocialization”, which are often mobilized to characterize the individual situation of the homeless, this paper instead focuses on the collective dimensions of the street experience to highlight and characterize its spatial-temporal, relational and moral structures. Thus this paper will show not only that the homeless can be understood as belonging to a relatively structured social world, but also that this this social order subsists despite the high turnover amongst members of the homeless microcosm.
