L’article propose d’interroger « l’intégration » et « l’éducation par le sport » comme catégories d’analyse et de pensée. En France, hormis la pratique du sport au sein des associations sportives scolaires, l’éducation par le sport ne relève pas du domaine de l’EPS obligatoire. Elle se situe dans le champ de l’activité sportive volontaire et notamment à l’initiative du mouvement sportif. Cependant, à la différence d’autres pays européens, en France, la notion d’éducation par le sport n’est pas vraiment utilisée, car on lui préfère généralement les notions d’intégration ou d’insertion par le sport. L’article propose d’interroger le consensus autour des fonctions sociales d’un sport « naturellement » intégrateur et de montrer que la liberté à l’égard des catégories nationales de pensée ne se conquiert qu’au prix d’un effort pour rendre explicites les problématiques obligées à propos des vertus éducatives et citoyennes du sport.

Thinking integration and education through sport in France: reflections on the categories of thinking about educational and social functions of sports.This article examines “integration” and “education through sport” as categories of analysis and thought (Brubaker, 2001). In France, apart from sport practice in the school athletic associations, education through sport is outside the field of compulsory physical education. It is placed in the field of voluntary sport actvity and particularly in the initiative of the sports movement. However, unlike other European countries, in France the notion of education through sport is not really used. It is generally prefered the concepts of integration or inclusion through sport. The article proposes to examine the consensus of social functions of sport as “naturally” integrator and to show that freedom, regarding national categories of thought, cannot be conquered without an effort to make explicit the problems related to the educational and civic virtues of sport.
