Si la révolution industrielle a largement mécanisé la force physique et conduit à faire émerger le design, aujourd’hui la révolution numérique interroge le design – qui ne cesse de se redéfinir – et permet notamment d’automatiser les décisions. Quels enjeux et quel rôle du design face à cette « algorithmisation de la décision » ? Cet article propose d’étudier comment le numérique automatise les décisions, et comment travailler la forme de ces décisions afin de les mettre au service de « l’habitabilité du monde ». Si le design ne peut pas tout et doit être alimenté en amont par d’autres disciplines, quelques pistes d’actions légitimes seront proposées en guise d’ouverture.

The industrial revolution has contributed to a mechanization of the physical force, which led to the emergence of design. Today, the numerical revolution questions the practice of design – which experiences constant redefinition – and allows in particular to automatize decision. What are the challenges and the place for design when facing such a « algorithmization of decisions » ? This paper examine to study how numerical technologies automatize decisions, and how to form those decisions in order « to improve or at least maintain the “habitability” of the world ». We will see that design can’t do everything and designers should be supported upstream by others fields, but that some legitimate action paths can nevertheless be proposed for designers concerned by the question.
