Felicidad e infelicidad de las familias confinadas en Francia: Un análisis exploratorio de la experiencia del confinamiento domiciliario

From March to June 2020, from the beginning of the lockdown to the first steps in easing lockdown, a collective of sociologists followed eighteen French families during regular tele-interviews, in order to understand the experiences of this unprecedented situation and the way in which these families reorganized their activities while they were taking place in a single space: the place of residence. The authors distinguish three relationships to lockdown (happy, unhappy and mixed feeling), and observe that although material conditions of existence play a determining role in the experience of lockdown, they are not sufficient on their own to explain the different positions. The gendered distribution of tasks, autonomy in the organization of professional activity and, more generally, the degree of control over the use of time are structuring dimensions of this experience, as is the place given to family life in the life plans of individuals and couples.
