La notion de vocation renvoie à un penchant ou à une disposition qui anime la personne indépendamment de sa volonté, et qui n’est aucunement le produit d’un choix délibéré. L’idée de vocation souligne de même la correspondance parfaite ou l’adéquation totale entre la personne et l’activité, le métier ou la fonction. En s’interrogeant sur les conditions sociales de production d’une correspondance entre le passé incorporé de l’individu, notamment sous la forme de désirs, et l’activité dans laquelle il s’engage, on prend conscience toutefois des difficultés de stabilisation dans le temps, à l’échelle de l’individu comme du groupe, d’un tel sentiment de vocation.

The notion of vocation refers to an inclination or a disposition which animates the person independently of his or her will and which is in no way the product of a deliberate choice. The idea of vocation also stresses the perfect correspondence or the total adequacy between the person and the activity, the occupation or the function. By questioning the social conditions of production of a correspondence between the individual’s incorporated past, particularly in the form of desires, and the activity in which he engages, one realizes, however, the difficulties of stabilization in the time, at the level of the individual as well as the group, of such a sense of vocation.
