Résumé La notion de « marchandise fictive » n’est pas simplement un slogan hétérodoxe commode pour critiquer l’incomplétude radicale de tout système marchand et par-là même les limites analytiques de la théorie dominante. C’est surtout la pierre angulaire de l’édifice institutionnaliste qui sous-tend l’ensemble des analyses socio-historiques de Karl Polanyi. Cet article explicite et articule les deux niveaux de cet édifice : un niveau théorique avec l’approche institutionnaliste de la marchandise et un niveau épistémologique avec la définition substantive de l’économie. Cet édifice comporte néanmoins une limite : la notion d’institution, qui est à la charnière des deux niveaux, n’est articulée à aucune réflexion pratique, de sorte que le potentiel révélateur et critique de cet édifice risque d’en être affaibli.

The notion of «the fictitious commodities» is not simply a convenient heterodox slogan to criticize the radical limits of any trade system and by there even the analytical limits of the dominant theory. It is especially the foundation of the institutionnalist perspectives that underlies all the Karl Polanyi’s socio-historic analyses. This explicit article and articulates both levels of this building: a theoretical level with the institutionnalist approach of the commodities and a philosophical level with the substantial definition of the economy. This construction contains nevertheless a limit: the notion of institution, which is in the hinge of both levels, is articulated in no practical reflection, so that the revealing and critical potential of this building risks to be weakened.
