Trois questions sont posées au modèle de la complexité en mosaïque. La première porte sur la relation entre le modèle et son illustration, en privilégiant l’exemple du cortex cérébral et des conceptions rivales qui peuvent en être proposées. La seconde porte sur l’universalité des « principes » de juxtaposition et d’intégration, et sur la relation entre science et philosophie. La troisième porte sur la limitation du nombre de principes à deux : peut-on envisager d’autres manières de faire des touts que la juxtaposition et l’intégration ?

The model proposed by Georges Chapouthier raises several interesting questions. One relates to the empirical support that the model is receiving from genuine instances of mosaic complexity like the organization of the cerebral cortex, of which conflicting views coexist today. A second question deals with the status of the principles of juxtaposition and integration and the relation between science and philosophy on which the model is based. A third question derives from Chapouthier’s idea of the “ways of whole-making”: should we admit more than two principles or processes?
