Les combats de Ribot pour la psychologie aboutissent à la formulation de principes méthodologiques (l’introspection et le recours aux études médicales) et de principes scientifiques (les concepts de réflexe et de mouvement) utilisés librement dans Matière et mémoire. Et avec le projet de « métaphysique positive » qu’il soutient entre 1901 et 1904, Bergson prend au Collège de France le relais du « positif », après que Ribot en a pacifié le terme.
