Prendre des décisions allant dans le sens de nos intérêts propres ou de ceux de nos proches constitue une faculté complexe, indispensable à l’adaptation et à l’autonomie. Nous exerçons quotidiennement cette faculté dans de nombreux domaines de la vie quotidienne, tels ceux des finances, des soins, de l’habitat ou encore du travail. Dans cet article, nous proposons une synthèse des connaissances sur la prise de décision reposant, pour une large part, sur les travaux récents effectués dans le domaine. Après quelques rappels conceptuels brefs s’appuyant essentiellement sur des travaux de psychologie cognitive, nous nous arrêtons sur les apports des neurosciences à notre compréhension des mécanismes de prise de décision. L’accent est mis sur le rôle de la cognition et des émotions dans la prise de décision, sur les structures cérébrales impliquées dans la prise de décision, ainsi que sur les paradigmes d’évaluation de la prise de décision accessibles. Nous espérons que cette synthèse apportera un éclairage utile sur un domaine encore très peu exploré en neuropsychologie humaine.

Decision-making: theoretical aspects, neuroanatomy and assessmentMaking decisions going to the sense of our own interests or those of our relatives constitutes a complex faculty indispensable for adaptation and autonomy. We daily exercise this faculty in many areas of everyday life such as finance, health care, housing or employment. In this article, we propose a synthesis of the knowledge on decision-making, mostly leaning on the current studies made in this domain. After a few conceptual reminders, primarily based on work done in the field of cognitive psychology, we stop on the contributions of neurosciences to our understanding of the mechanisms of decision-making. The emphasis is put on the role of cognition and emotions in decision-making, on the brain structures involved in decision-making as well as on the accessible assessment paradigms of decision-making. This overview shows that if the psychological mechanisms and the brain regions involved in decision-making are numerous and better known today, many uncertainties remain concerning the tools useful to understand decision-making impairments in brain-damaged patients. An important experimental work should be done in this field, given that it is essential, in terms of research, in order to refine, validate or invalidate the available theoretical propositions on decision-making and, clinically, to better understand the difficulties for brain-damaged patients in a critical area for daily autonomy. We hope that this overview will provide a useful insight into an area that is still largely unexplored in human neuropsychology.
