L’esthétique occidentale du paysage est construite sur le fond d’une dualité entre le réel et la représentation : d’un côté le paysage que nous parcourons avec nos yeux et notre corps dans l’espace physique, d’un autre côté le paysage représenté dans des images de tout type. Cette dualité est traditionnellement interprétée selon un rapport hiérarchique : le paysage représenté constituerait l’origine et le modèle de l’expérience des paysages réels. Mais il existe d’autres façons de comprendre cette dualité : l’une des formes possibles de l’expérience paysagère consiste en effet à passer du paysage réel au paysage représenté et vice versa, ce passage soulevant le problème de la différence ontologique entre le monde réel et le monde de la représentation et pouvant être à ce titre défini comme une transgression.

Western landscape aesthetics was built upon the opposition between representation and reality: on the one hand the landscape that we scan with our eyes and bodies in physical space, on the other hand the landscape represented in images of all kinds. Such duality is traditionally interpreted as a hierarchy: the represented landscape allegedly constitutes the origin and model of the experience of real landscapes. But there are other ways of understanding it: indeed one of the possible forms of experiencing a landscape consists in going back and forth from the real to the represented landscape and vice versa. Such a movement raises the problem of the ontological difference between the real world and the world of representation, and can therefore be defined as a kind of transgression.
