L’illisibilité des récits de mémoire des événements qui ont bouleversé la première moitié du siècle, est devenue au même titre que l’indicible un topos du genre du témoignage. Limite posée au discours des témoins véritables, signal de l’impartageabilité d’une expérience hors normes, l’illisibilité sort peu à peu de ce seul statut de limite constitutive du récit, pour devenir l’objet même des témoignages contemporains. Au travers de ce discours sur les limites imposées au genre du témoignage, les nouveaux témoins, ceux qui écrivent à distance des événements, sans avoir forcément participé eux-mêmes aux événements qu’ils relatent, interrogent l’héritage qui nous a été laissé et surtout notre capacité à devenir héritiers de cette part de l’histoire. L’illisibilité nous confronte à notre statut de témoin du témoin.

Illegibility of memory’s relations, these literary statements of the events which have shaped the twentieth century, is becoming one topos of the testimonial, in the same way as the notion of unspeakable. It is a frame set on the testimonial, which means that it isn’t possible to share what is beyond compare. Although in contemporary memory’s relations, illegibility is becoming the very subject of narration. This new type of testimonial is written a long time after the events and sometimes by people who didn’t participate to these ones. Illegibility is a way to wonder our legacy and our capacity to become successor of the real witness. Testimonials are becoming the place to leave us facing our position of witness of witness.
