Durant l’occupation de la France par les nazis, de 1940 à 1945, la direction de la RLC a décidé de ne pas publier la revue. L’année suivante en Grande-Bretagne parait, à Cardiff, une revue qui en assure l’intérim : Comparative Literature Studies. F. Baldensperger y publie, en 1945, un article où il revient sur les débuts de la RLC, en rappelant les espoirs soulevés par la fin de la « Grande Guerre » et en les confrontant aux réalités qui ont suivi. De son côté, J.-M. Carré titre « Recommencement » l’article de tête de la première livraison de la RLC à reparaître en 1946. Les deux articles, de tonalités différentes, manifestent l’un et l’autre la volonté de concevoir la littérature comparée comme une discipline au service d’un humanisme moderne.

During the Nazi occupation of France (1940-1945), according to a decision of editorship the RLC ceased its publication; during the following year in Cardiff (UK) a journal was launched, Comparative Literature Studies, which provided a temporary replacement. In 1965, F. Baldensperger published in this journal a paper in which he revisited the beginnings of RLC: he reminded expectations raised when the Great War was over and compared them with what happened thereafter. For his part, in the RLC issue of 1946, J.-M. Carré gave his leading article the title “Beginning again”. Both papers, though written in a different mood, conceive comparative literature as a subject promoting a modern humanism.
