This article returns to The Theory of the Novel and reads it according to a parallelism with Lukács’s Ästhetik, which was published in 1963. It defends a minor reading of the essay and makes us able to refer Lukács’s criticism to the duality of the aesthetic, on the one hand, and to the social and the ethical, on the other hand. This double duality commands, in the novels analyzed by Lukács, specific approaches to nature and history and parallax views. This simultaneous reading of The Theory of the Novel and Ästhetik is also a response to the impasse which many experts on Lukács confess about the usages of his theses in novel studies today.
