Cet article propose une définition de « l’histoire populaire », en évoquant sa filiation intellectuelle, ses risques, ses apports, et les questions méthodologiques qu’elle pose, notamment en matière de sources, d’espace traité et de chronologie. Cette « histoire du peuple » manifeste le retour de la question sociale en histoire, et illustre la responsabilité sociale de l’historien.

This article suggests a definition of a people’s history by referring to its intellectual background, as well as to the risks it incurs but also the advances it brings about. It will consider the questions raised as to the method to use, regarding especially the sources, the space and time concerned. Through such a people’s history the social issue is back in history, which makes it clear how much a historian is responsible socially.
