Strategies for increasing the value of jobs stigmatized by society: The case of home care workers

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2020. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In view of the aging population, jobs related to home care assistance for the elderly are considered as vast opportunities for employment. However, these jobs suffer from a lack of prestige, affecting their attractiveness and employee retention. Based on the dirty work literature, this study proposes further understanding the strategies used by home care workers to cope with the threat to their identity stemming from their jobs so as to better address how to counter their perceptions of being devalued on the basis of their profession. By doing so, we provide organizations with practical avenues of reflection to help home care workers make sense of their jobs. These suggestions are related to task flexibility, training, and employee socialization.
