The History of Nature and The History of Mankind: on Kant’s Use of the Concept of History

Kant uses the term “history” in two very different kinds of texts: cosmological texts, and texts concerning human history. This raises two questions. Is it possible to use the phrase “history of nature” in a strict sense? Does the word “history” mean the same thing when it refers to nature and when it refers to humanity? We argue that both questions should be answered positively and suggest to what extent Kant’s texts on history can be reconsidered from that point of view, and with an eye towards the transformation of the concept of history. This can help us clarify, from a Kantian perspective, what belongs to theoretical questioning, and what belongs to practical questioning.
